Drumaness Mills 2
Islandmagee 0
DRUMANESS Mills booked their spot in the third round of the Paddy
Power Steel and Sons Cup after an impressive home win against
Islandmagee.
The Mills, who had lost their two previous home games in the Premier
Section, brought that run to an end with a deserved victory over an
experienced visiting outfit.
Brian McIlmurray, who is showing a lot of promise up front, started
promisingly and with five minutes gone carved out an opening for
John Connolly, but he shot into the side netting.
The Mills continued to pile forward with Kevin Duffin and Mark
Rainey, who was making his first team debut, catching the eye and
with 15 minutes gone Gavin McEvoy squared the ball for Duffin to
have a pop at goal, but his strike hit the upright.
Drumaness hadn't long to wait for the breakthrough and with 18
minutes gone Neil Walsh was on hand to steer in a superb pass from
Connolly after he had beaten two men in the box.
Islandmagee enjoyed a brief spell of possession, but all they had to
show for their efforts was a free kick that went well wide.
The Mills almost made it 2-0 in the 43rd minute when McEvoy again
created an opening with a perfect cross into the box, but the danger
was averted by the Islandmagee centre half.
Two minutes into the second half the industrious McIlmurray and Neil
Walsh combined to rob an Islandmagee defender, but McIlmurray shot
over from a good position.
With 55 minutes gone Connolly also shot over from a free as the
Mills looked to kill the game off.
Islandmagee defended in numbers and were content to hit the Mills on
the break, but they rarely threatened a resilient Mills defence.
Drumaness finally put the game out of Islandmagee's reach in the
90th minute when McEvoy broke away from the halfway line and
proceeded to lob the ball over the Islandmagee goalkeeper for a goal
of sheer quality.
